Letting Go of What’s Not Yours: How to Release Worry Over Others’ Choices

It’s easy to get caught up in other people’s decisions. Whether it’s family, friends, or co-workers, sometimes their choices can feel personal, like you’re carrying the weight of their actions on your shoulders. But here’s the truth: you can’t control what others do. What you can control is how much space you allow their decisions to take up in your life.
It’s time to ground yourself and release that burden. As Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” Let’s focus on practical exercises and mindset shifts to help you release that weight and regain your peace.
1. Mindfulness Meditation (5-10 minutes)
Steps:
Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and close your eyes.
Focus on your breath. As you inhale, feel the air enter your lungs; as you exhale, let any tension release from your body.
When thoughts about others come into your mind, acknowledge them without judgment, and bring your focus back to your breath.
Goal: This trains your mind to observe your thoughts without reacting to them. By grounding yourself in the present moment, you give yourself permission to release control over things that aren’t yours to manage.

Steps:
Write down the things that are bothering you about others’ decisions on a piece of paper.
After writing, read it aloud and say: “I release this; it is not mine to carry.”
Destroy the paper (tear it, burn it safely, etc.) as a symbolic gesture of letting go.

Visualize letting go of the rope, watching it drift away, and feel a sense of lightness.
Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, say: “I let go. Their journey is not mine.”
Goal: This exercise helps you internalize that others’ paths are separate from your own. You’re trusting their journey is their responsibility, while yours is yours.
4. Mantras for Detachment
Repeat these mantras when you feel overwhelmed by other people’s choices:
“I trust others to live their own journey.”
“Their choices do not define me.”
“I release the need to control; I embrace my own peace.”
“I send love and let go of attachment to outcomes.”
Goal: These mantras remind you to release control over things that aren’t meant for you to carry. As you repeat them, you reinforce your ability to choose peace, trusting the process rather than holding onto outcomes.
5. Journaling for Self-Focus
Steps:
Every evening, write down one decision or action you made that day that you’re proud of.
Reflect on what you did for yourself, shifting focus from others’ choices to your own empowerment.
Goal: This exercise helps you refocus your energy back to your own growth and decisions, reinforcing that you are responsible for your own journey, not anyone else’s. You’re acknowledging that your actions matter most.
6. Affirmation Breathing
Steps:
Sit or stand comfortably, take deep breaths.
With each inhale, mentally say: “I am calm and grounded.”
With each exhale, mentally say: “I release what I cannot control.”
Goal: Aligning your breath with affirmations strengthens your sense of calm and helps you release the need to manage things outside your control, bringing peace to your inner world.
